VILLAGE PEOPLE ENCOUNTER

Image
Picture credit: deposit photos When it comes to dealing with village people, you just have to pay obeisance to them if you don't want them to se yeye you infront of aradugbo . Apart from the heartbreak that happened later in the day, yesterday was a lucky day. I was delving into the difficult aspect of my course outline and to some extent, I was scared. I was more than confused when my instructor started drawing lines for pattern. Construction was the only Maths topic I loved in secondary school but this was more complex. To be honest, I hated Maths. The relationship between both of us is toxic. Maths should be abolished in this life because what is all these numbers tori olorun . But God so good, I did mine and it came out well. My joy knew no bound. I was beaming. I did not hesitate to tell anyone who cared to listen that I overcame this pattern by the blood of the lamb (let me be religious a bit). Mobola 1-0 Village people Little did I know that my village people went to prepa...

LOGICAL ARGUMENT

I try as much as possible not to take part in public argument especially on trivial issue or trending topics. This is not because I do not know what to say but because I understand that not everyone is blessed with the gift of logical argument; while some can logically argue with no beef or fight, others cannot. Plus we are quite different and so is our reasoning. but I need people to understand that the world is not always black and white and that someone does not see from your perspective does not make them less human or less knowledgeable. We are wired differently in order to think critically.  One of the main ingredient to a successful agreement is critical thinking and open mindedness to learn and unlearn things. In this case, it may be you learning something or the other party. However, it has been established that most argument in Nigeria is not tailored towards critical thinking and to some extent it is always narrow-minded. Please note that I am not saying those who engage...

EDUCATE A CHILD

Image
Right from my dream, I've seen pictures of how I should slay today. That sweet moment when you have your clothes figured out in your head and you can't wait to sway your beautiful portable body that Jesus gave you. But the unexpected happened! The clouds began to gather and rain was imminent. I didn't want to imagine what will happen. It poured and eventually stopped and daughter of Zion set out. I need to commend the weather today. It really did a good job soothing my skin compared to the scorching sun lately. However, the odds of living in an area that is susceptible to flood is annoying but I can't say rain should not fall. Although that's the least annoying thing that happened. I was walking gently and trying as much as possible to avoid any stain when this bike man came from nowhere and splashed water on me (one of the perks of rainfall in Lagos). Kai! My beautiful cloth was in ruin. Spontaneously, I had carried my big umbrella and hit him on the head just like...

OVERCOMING LOW-SPIRITEDNESS

Image
Picture credit: Clip art library Have you ever been in a phase where everything that seems interesting to you becomes shadow? Yes, I have been there and I can relate perfectly; atleast a 99.9%. Underutilization of one's skill or ability, so to say, can be a determining factor in relegating one to a depressed state.  This kind of phase is quite different from the usual because it doesn't have to do with pay nor work environment. It is a bit tilted towards having to deal with same routine everyday when one can actually explore. That feeling of "I can do better than this or be somewhere expressing my potential" but caged in a corner where it is hard to leave. The saddest thing is this feeling begins so little which makes it almost impossible to decipher until it's become a large sore to deal with it. Is it then okay to be bombarded with so much workload? Absolutely not! Everything in life requires balance and one's work-life, including other facet of life, is not...

MY MOLUE EXPERIENCE

Image
Being a born and bred Lagos babe doesn't guarantee that one wouldn't exhibit some "villageism" traits.  Don't bother to look for that word in the dictionary; it's from the heavens.  Throwing back to the first time I came across a proper molue bus and I can't stop asking myself if I was actually the one that displayed that level of araokoness . It was my first time in Oshodi; one of the craziest place in Lagos. Forget the semi tush Oshodi that has evolved now. Oshodi used to be, and is still if I'm not mistaken, the headquarter of all atrocities: both the invented one and the one Satan is still thinking of inventing.  My mum had planned to pay my cousin a visit at Abule Egba and since I was not so used to going out, she decided to take me along. The journey was smooth until we got to Oshodi. I saw all shades of rickety old long buses popularly known as "molue"  painted in yellow and white. The buses looked like they were going to fall to the ...

THE BEAUTIFUL LADY AND HER DAUGHTER

Image
There is this beautiful lady everyone is after, both the rich and the poor. She is so beautiful with nice curves and enchanting smiles which makes it difficult for no one to ignore her presence. She has that much magic on people. However, she has a daughter everyone hates.  That is impossible. Right? She is called life and her daughter, challenges. I guess you can relate now. You might be wondering why my current posts are centered around this lady called life. There are one thousand and one happenings in the world right world right now and the least we can do is take a break to study this beautiful lady that has decided to disturb her lovers, people, by dishing out different cards. I held a nylon this morning which contained some content and discovered it was not carefully knotted which posed some level of difficulty when I wanted to untie it.   My impatient self dug my finger into the nylon and tore it apart thereby exposing the content and damaging the nylon in the pro...

LIFE IS A GAME

Image
Gaming, for me, is an avenue to escape the harsh realities of life. Although the problem still persist thereafter but that temporary escape does the magic at times. It provides the needed break and allows the brain to refresh. Mobola decided to play games to relief the tension building up in her after the president's speech that left everyone speechless yesterday. I kept scaling smoothly from one level to another till I got stuck on a level. Typical me would not quit that game till I passed that level; I love games like that so I tend to pick challenging ones.  But the harder I tried, the more I failed. It was funny because I had played like twenty levels without encountering difficulties but this particular one seemed like it came prepared, singing Mario theme song underneath " nibi loma ku si... " There are times I was so close to winning but a single move would destroy everything. I was eager to win so I did not bother to calculate my move. The game and I is a virtual ...

RETRACE YOUR STEP

Precisely five years ago, I made a decision to leave my parent's parish to another one. Well, a typical African mother would refuse me such decision because it was not to be heard of, moreover, I was still so young but my mum had no issue with it. She understood the concept of 'every man for himself' in Christianity.  I could remember the smile on her face the day I told her due to some underlying reasons. Whichever way, she just wanted me to leave the house every Sunday morning and be committed. Did I find committed where I went to? Of course yes! But that is not the main reason I write today. Prior to last Sunday, the burning urge to go to church was not there at all. This is the case of many worshippers since worship centers resumed. Readjusting to Sunday routines after five months of break is not so easy.  I summoned courage and went but something happened and I had to leave for my parent's parish. As expected, mum and a whole lot of others were surprised to see me....

DRAWING STRENGTH FROM LITTLE SOURCE

Image
After a lot of dancing, stress and hard time creating contents, I decided to take a nap.  It was not one needed but it was the only way to avoid the emptiness I was feeling from within at that time. Moreover, it was a sort of temporary escape from reality.  I woke up, with voice gone and headache; I was more weak than when I slept although this time, it was more of body and physical weakness than that of mental exhaustion I felt earlier.  I sat down in a corner with phone in hand when a subtle knock on the door jolted me back to reality. It was my neighbour's daughter.  First of, she noticed how dark the room was and could not help but question why it was dark and why I was alone. I was not in for questioning and I guess she noticed my mood but I could not ignore her.  As a form of response, I told her everyone is out plus I just woke up.  Guess what she did She hugged me and said "Aunty Bola, I miss you and I just came to check up on you" then left afterwa...

JOLIFICATION WEEKEND

Hi lovers, The weekend is here already and I was thinking on what to write on and boom, something came to mind. Today, I will be writing on ways to enjoy leisure during weekends or better put, things to do and avoid during your leisure and on weekends. It is no news that Lagos alone is stressful not to talk of her children: stress and traffic. These two are energy sapping and if not properly managed can lead to various health issues. Thus, it is important to devise a means to recover all lost strength in order to be fully prepared for the coming week. Now, sit back and enjoy. Sleeping First on my list is sleep, sound sleep. I know many people will have predicted this to be the first thing I would mention. Sleep is a natural antistress drug needed to regain lost energy. You do not need to have a basket full of pain relievers; just sleep and watch it do its magic. Writing Contrary to people's opinion that writing is stressful, writing can be a form leisure activity. It do...

MONEY RITUAL HACK 101

Image
I saw this picture and the first thing that came to mind was "really". Naturally, garri is referred to as a "poor" man food but can same be said of this commodity in this present day. Definitely no! The reactions from people got me laughing. Eighty percent of the people who commented on the post did not say Amen to it. Some even went as far as saying "let me deal with my portion while you face yours". Quite funny, right? The answer is not far fetched. Garri simply paired with an alternative that increased its value. Yeah, it took time but it eventually got there. To me, I would say garri has increased in value and currently, its market value is far greater than what it used to be. Thus, a bowl of garri in the market today is #1,200 or thereabouts as opposed to the initial price of #400.  These days, garri can no longer be described as a poor man's food as even the poor can barely afford it. One notable mistake we make in this generation is t...

CONCEPT OF THEORY AND APPLICATION

Image
Photo credit: TeamDouble Someone once asked me if I can communicate in pidgin and I gallantly said yes. I mean I hear people saying the language around me, moreover, I studied it as a course in school. So why shouldn't I be able to effectively use it in communication. Mobola has forgotten that theory is far different from practical. A truth some people are yet to come to terms with. Only heaven knows if my village people heard me boasting that day and they decided to disgrace me. Using pidgin in spontaneous speech is more difficult than you can ever imagine.  "Mobola, how far na? I hear say you dey run a blog. You fit explain wetin d blog dey for" came the question. I stood there transfixed. I did not know what to say. Not that I did not have the answer but it dawned on me I could not make a long sentence with pidgin especially when a Warri boy is involved. I would have to overcome that feat with cold mixing (mixing one language with another in a sentenc...

RETAINING YOUR VALUE

Image
It is no longer news that the environment we find  ourselves in play a vital role in our formation and in our decision making process albeit this can be consciously or unconsciously. I remember hating the concept of "fa" which is popularly used among the people of Kwara. The word "fa" is usually added to the end of every sentence. It is like a necessary ingredient and the funniest part is that it is used by both the educated and non-educated. I really cannot pinpoint the origin or the specific history behind it but I do know you cannot escape hearing it from an indigene of Kwara state or someone who's lived there for some couple of years. As luck would have it, my secondary school education was in Kwara state and I was careful enough not to pick the "fa" syndrome but I doubt if one could help it. It was not evident in my speech for the first two years, however, I became a pro in it as time went by.  The shock on my sister's face w...

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Image
Photo credit: Kesley Domestic violence is one of the social vices the world is dealing with today and in as much as all possible measures have been put in place to curtail its excesses, the number of victims keep rising nevertheless.   An important thing to note, however, is that most of these things stem from the family. The mentality drilled into a child right from conception goes a long in shaping that particular child's entire life. It is just like an expectant mother always reading bedtime stories to the child in her womb. He/she would most likely love to read. Same goes for a child whose parents continuously fights in the home. A large part of his/ her subconscious would be formed on this basis.   It is not enough to mention family as the sole factor that enhances domestic violence as there are other numerous factors such as the environment, movies to mention just a few. Speaking of movies, I think I am delighted at the current change in th...

REVISIT AND REVIEW YOUR PAST DECISIONS

Image
Photo credit: Adeq8 design Sometimes, making decisions on the spur of the moment is not the wisest thing to do - though there are times we can not help it - because we tend to regret we ever took such decisions with time. We have all been there and we should be able to relate. One of my greatest forte was (note the word 'was') sending  my wishes across to family and friends especially when the calendar changes to a new month or a new year. I never, for once, missed it. I enjoyed it so much that I would write epistles just to usher in the new month.  Notwithstanding, I made the decision never to wish anyone a 'happy new month' two years back due to some  circumstances I can't recall for now but I am sure it was a very great one and I have kept to my promise ever since then. Nonetheless, I reply to every happy new month messages and wishes but you would never see me sending one. I got comfortable in this new skin and it became a norm for me. There are times I would ev...

JOLLOF RICE AND CHICKEN

Image
I did a virtual catching up with some friends yesterday and yeah we really had a nice time, however, something broke the carmel's back. A particular lady, after the usual pleasantries, came up with "when is your wedding. I can't wait to eat jollof rice and chicken". As opposed to  my usual self, I was calm because I felt some things are better explained and drilled hard into people's brain before they get it. So I replied with " awwwn! It must be so long you ate jollof rice and chicken at home that you crave for it so badly; even if it means eating it a wedding". Now, this isn't me being sarcastic or trying to savage her. I further ask what was delaying her from getting married too and she replied "school" and moreover, her priorities are different from that now. A good and perfect answer I was looking for!   Certain responsibilities come with a ring. It is not all about the paparazzi. Are you even willing to shoulder the responsibilities t...

THE MAGIC OF PERFUME

Image
Perfume is the most intense form of memory ~Jean Paul Sometimes back, I was of the opinion that gifting me perfumes and deodorant was a way of telling me "you have body odour, take care of yourself". . Pardon me for that archaic mentality. Happenings around me made me come to that conclusion. But now I know better. Nevertheless, I have grown to love perfumes even more than I can imagine. The compliments I receive when I wear one always leave me blushing; even though blacks do not blush. Funny enough, I am also particular about my bottle of perfume as I am with the content contained in the bottle. I can spend minutes admiring the bottle alone. Overtime, perfumes have been described as the "crowning glory" of one's dressing. Needless to say, your dressing is not complete without a perfume. Also, one plain secret I would like to share is that beauty is not the only ingredients/criteria that attracts people to you. You become automatically more attractive when you s...

DIVORCING UNCLE ANGER

Image
The world, right now, can be likened to a rotten egg. So many mishaps and sad happenings here and there; we do not even know what would happen in the next minute. But we are hoping on God that the sky would be blue again. As usual, I was surfing the internet and I stumbled on a post which was so disheartening. An elder brother stabbed his kid brother to death because of a bottle of drink; fanta. Yes, you read right. Ordinary fanta! In as much as we try to dismiss this as the devil's work, the fact still remains that sometimes, we are the devil. It is not until a man in a black apparel with horns appear.  More often than not, humans nurse mini demons that eventually develop into full blown monsters among which is ANGER. To me, anger is like a catalyst which fuels evil, hatred and what have you. It is so swift and easily ignited, however, it disappears as fast as lightning when it has achieved its aim leaving the host clueless and helpless. Uncle anger leaves you charged up with adre...

EQUAL RIGHT

Image
Some couple of months back, I wrote on siblings palava with last borns being my vocal point. It generated a lot of reactions from my readers especially the older siblings. Not to worry dear last borns, I am here  to fight for your right today. Maybe not just last borns but subsequent child(ren), that is, children who are not the first child.  It is a common law in a Nigerian home (still looking for who made the law) to see various pictures of first born child beautifully dressed, cutting birthday cakes and the likes. The love and affection these people receive from our parents are so massive with reason being that they are the first fruit, womb openers and all other terms they are qualified with. Now, do not get me wrong. I am not saying parents do not love subsequent children. Of course, they do.  However, in this case you get to hear " Mio le waku. Ko kuku se alakobi ". Translated as "I cannot come and die. (S)he is not my first child". Some parents even go as far...

REASONS I WAS NOT SO THRILLED ABOUT THIS YEAR'S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Image
I read a post on Facebook, precisely on Headstart community group. The writer was not so keen on celebrating his birthday this year and immediately, I could relate to that feeling. My birthday was barely two months ago and unlike previous years when I was fascinated and even threw a small get together, I was skeptical about this year's. If possible, I wanted to become invisible on that day then come back the next day. I just did not want any drama associated with birthday: calls, pouring of water, messages and all.  Now, do not get me wrong. Being skeptical does not mean I did not appreciate God for the privilege of being alive to witness another new beginning. Of course! I did. But rather than receive calls and get carried away by wishes, I wanted a time for self reflection. A lone time to just think and think about how to utilize the new year and develop my capability. All of me wanted a meeting; a meeting with my head and thinking faculty about the way forward.  This was no...
