DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Domestic violence is one of the social vices the world is dealing with today and in as much as all possible measures have been put in place to curtail its excesses, the number of victims keep rising nevertheless.

An important thing to note, however, is that most of these things stem from the family. The mentality drilled into a child right from conception goes a long in shaping that particular child's entire life. It is just like an expectant mother always reading bedtime stories to the child in her womb. He/she would most likely love to read. Same goes for a child whose parents continuously fights in the home. A large part of his/ her subconscious would be formed on this basis.

It is not enough to mention family as the sole factor that enhances domestic violence as there are other numerous factors such as the environment, movies to mention just a few.

Speaking of movies, I think I am delighted at the current change in the movie industry. Yes, a lot of changes have been made. While I was away, I was mostly preoccupied with watching movies and thankfully, majority of it centered on domestic violence. A particular one that caught my attention was Emi Mi (my spirit). The husband turned to a beast entirely after marriage with a strong patriarchy mentality that the "woman" is his property thus, she has no right to live: no association, no career, no access to social media and all of that.

Furthermore, the little child was not spared. The father continuously drilled into him that women does not have sense and the only way to instill sense into them was by beating them.

However, there was a change in the narrative. Naturally, the popular wave is that the child has no right to meddle in the affairs of his parents but in this particular one, he was the catalyst that spurred his mother into moving out of the house. He would block his father from beating his mother and sometimes, go as far as biting his father just so to free his mother. I do not know if you get the twist.

Likewise, for the second movie, which I do not presently remember the title, centers around a career lady whose husband continually beats her. To cut the long story short, she moved out of the house despite the husband's pleading. This is the twist. The movie narrative we all grew up to acknowledge is that it's either the woman/man, as the case may be, stays in there because of what people would say or in worst case scenario dies in that abusive relationship. But that is changing. It is better to move out and be alive than stay and die.

In addition, domestic violence is not limited to just women. Men, children, teenagers get abused too. In fact you are subject to abuse so far you are human. Nonetheless, my resolution is this. Do not stay or endure domestic violence no matter the reason. An abuser would always be an abuser. Your life is more important than what people would say. Save that first!

  3. Domestic violence is the mother of all violence they say "charity begins from home" well it's a sad thing to think some children walk in shoes of their parents in issues relating to domestic violence. The family been the smallest unit in the community has countless inaudible roles to play in formation of an upright individual.
Environmental factors such as movie and exposure can trigger the wrong centers in the brain to think alike.
But with the right upbringing it could be history...
It's sad not everyone can belong to a family not everyone actually comes from family that are morally upright but what is always necessary regardless of class or family is been kind.
I always say if you are to choose between right or kind choose kind because right or wrong are relative..
We are all accountable for our actions and inactions.

    1. Not everyone has the opportunity of writing their wrongs due to a fixed mentality but we hope, that the trend is changing.

  5. Thank God you mentioned the factors that contribute to violence with family playing a major role thus, the only way this can be straightened is when everyone is drilled in the right path of living from the minimal level which further shapes their mentality and creates a healthy environment for all to live in. However, this change can only be achieved if we all work together; all for all.

The family is an important part of a child's growth, thus there should be proper care that it doesn't pollute the child even before the out side world does

    1. Yes, I agree. Parenting goes far beyond just birthing a child. It includes inculcating the right value in the child.

  10. This is an eye opener to some parents who do not know that children are watching the way they behave. Parents should be role models and the other way round.
Thanks Mobola for this wonderful piece.
