RETAINING YOUR VALUE

Image
It is no longer news that the environment we find  ourselves in play a vital role in our formation and in our decision making process albeit this can be consciously or unconsciously. I remember hating the concept of "fa" which is popularly used among the people of Kwara. The word "fa" is usually added to the end of every sentence. It is like a necessary ingredient and the funniest part is that it is used by both the educated and non-educated. I really cannot pinpoint the origin or the specific history behind it but I do know you cannot escape hearing it from an indigene of Kwara state or someone who's lived there for some couple of years. As luck would have it, my secondary school education was in Kwara state and I was careful enough not to pick the "fa" syndrome but I doubt if one could help it. It was not evident in my speech for the first two years, however, I became a pro in it as time went by.  The shock on my sister's face w...

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Image
Photo credit: Kesley Domestic violence is one of the social vices the world is dealing with today and in as much as all possible measures have been put in place to curtail its excesses, the number of victims keep rising nevertheless.   An important thing to note, however, is that most of these things stem from the family. The mentality drilled into a child right from conception goes a long in shaping that particular child's entire life. It is just like an expectant mother always reading bedtime stories to the child in her womb. He/she would most likely love to read. Same goes for a child whose parents continuously fights in the home. A large part of his/ her subconscious would be formed on this basis.   It is not enough to mention family as the sole factor that enhances domestic violence as there are other numerous factors such as the environment, movies to mention just a few. Speaking of movies, I think I am delighted at the current change in th...

REVISIT AND REVIEW YOUR PAST DECISIONS

Image
Photo credit: Adeq8 design Sometimes, making decisions on the spur of the moment is not the wisest thing to do - though there are times we can not help it - because we tend to regret we ever took such decisions with time. We have all been there and we should be able to relate. One of my greatest forte was (note the word 'was') sending  my wishes across to family and friends especially when the calendar changes to a new month or a new year. I never, for once, missed it. I enjoyed it so much that I would write epistles just to usher in the new month.  Notwithstanding, I made the decision never to wish anyone a 'happy new month' two years back due to some  circumstances I can't recall for now but I am sure it was a very great one and I have kept to my promise ever since then. Nonetheless, I reply to every happy new month messages and wishes but you would never see me sending one. I got comfortable in this new skin and it became a norm for me. There are times I would ev...

SEXUAL ABUSE - SEXUAL KNOWLEDGE (PART 2)

Image
The devil is a liar! Somebody shout the devil is a liar! I have written a handful only for my phone to suddenly go off even when my battery percent is 89. I guess it is because of how sensitive the topic is. That's by the way. Couple of months back, I had written on sexual abuse but did not get to complete it. Today, I would be writing a sequel to it. However, I'd be giving two scenarios. I was so bored yesterday and I decided to do a video call with a friend. In the course of our conversation, I had shouted "fuck you" and I did not fail to catch the weird looks from my neighbours. Then a man approached me and said "you shouldn't be saying those words. It's not befitting for a well trained girl like you". I only smiled but instead of replying, I had grabbed my notepad and penned something. He has given me inspiration for a topic. It was not bad of him poke nosing after all. I was just wondering if this man knows how sexually knowledgeable I am, then ...

OH NO! I GOT A CRAZY SCHOOL MUM

Image
School mother, school daughter, lovers and every other synonymous titles were associated to secondary school life. It would all seem like the world is against you if you do not have one back then. Unlike every other JJC, I had none of the aforementioned. It wasn't their fault. Who would pick a sharp mouth like me who usually gets into a fight with her cousin all the time. It wasn't like I don't have senior friends. I do have the likes of sister Faith, Biodun, Bose, Blessing and Molade. So I wasn't lonely. I enjoyed the privileges other mates with school mother enjoyed. Sister Molade and Sis Bose were both in SS3 so they usually arrange how our school uniform and other clothes would be washed and ironed. All we need do is to fetch water. It's a crime for any junior affiliated with sister Molade and sister Bose to be found dirty. Ah! Death has come niyen . On the other hand, sis Faith and sis Bose were lovers of novels. Fortunately for me, I was into novels then. We...

THE LIGHT IS GRADUALLY GETTING DIM

Image
Today, in history, is symbolic. Little wonder I woke up to rain. Maybe the heaven have finally decided to smile on Nigeria and bring all these sufferings to an end. Not only does my pen bleed this morning, my heart bleeds and cries out. It is the morning of democracy but absolutely all demos have gone crazy. We can't even "demo"  because the pain inflicted on us is beyond us. Leaders have become lovers of themselves with no interest of the masses at heart. Do not beg to differ because even the ones who are truthful and loyal does so at their own peril. Of a truth, the true definition of democracy is lost and we have skillfully crafted another meaning for ourselves. Politics have become a do or die affair. It's either you win or win even if it means going through the needle eyes. Arise! O compatriots; says our national anthem but can we arise? How shall we arise when our lives is not secured. Tell me people, how shall we arise against external forces when we have inter...

GLOSSOPHOBIA

"Eerrrrrrm...today...I'd be t.a.l.k.i.n.g...so so so" I'm quite sure most people can relate to this. Sometimes in my year 4, I was to represent my group in a group presentation since the spokesman had an appointment with our project supervisor that same day. The topic "feminism" was something everyone could relate too. I had even prepared by making researches and reading extensively on the topic. You needed to see me bragging among my peers that day. As in, a whole me, Mobola wants to do presentation in class. Dem go collect. I remembered rehearsing even before the class and everything was perfect.  The set time came and the lecture commenced. Of course the lecturer called out the groups scheduled for presentation that day and we all came out. The first group did their thing and discussions were centered on their presentation. Mobola should have been prepared by now, right? Ehn ehn. That's where the real deal came in. Suddenly, everyone was looking lik...
